ΟΙ ΝΕΚΡΟΙ ΠΡΟΣ ΤΟΥΣ ΖΩΝΤΕΣ,1848,ήταν η αιτία της φυλάκισης του.

Συνεργάστηκε με τον Μαρξ στην έκδοση της ΝΕΑΣ ΕΦΗΜΕΡΙΔΑΣ ΤΟΥ ΡΗΝΟΥ.

Το μεταφραστικό του έργο είναι επίσης αξιόλογο.
Μετέφρασε Γουίλιαμ Γουέρντζγουερθ,Χένρυ Γουότζγουερθ Λονγκφέλοου,Γουόλτ Χουίτμαν,Ρόμπερτ Μπέρνς,Βίκτωρα Ουγκώ και Μολιέρο.
Οι παραπάνω μεταφράσεις του εξοικείωσαν το γερμανικό κοινό με αυτούς τους μεγάλους δραματουργούς.
