Ο ενθουσιασμός του για την κλασσική γλυπτική που γνώρισε στην Ιταλία τον οδήγησε,αργότερα,να γιορτάζει τη χρονολογία της άφιξης του εκεί το 1797 ως τα "ρωμα'ι'κά γενέθλια¨ του.
Τα περισσότερα από το πιο χαρακτηριστικά γλυπτά του είναι εμπνευσμένα από μορφές ή θέματα της Κλασσικής Αρχαιότητας.
''Η Ζωφόρος του Αλεξάνδρου'',1812,ανάγλυφο στο ανάκτορο στον Κυρηνάλιο Λόφο στη Ρώμη που φιλοτέχνησε σε μόλις τρείς μήνες,δείχνει την πυρετώδη ενεργητικότητα του.
